About London Canary Wharf
London Canary Wharf is a major business district, located in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, England, and it is home to the majority of the United Kingdom's tallest buildings and premier office spaces. Canary Wharf lies on the site of the West India Docks on the Isle of Dogs, which in Medieval times was known as Stepney Marsh. The name of Isle of Dogs is believed to have been given due to the royal kennels in the area.
The West India Docks were opened in 1802 and were considered to be the country's greatest civil engineering structure of its time. In May 1988, the constructions began at Canary Wharf and 2 years later the well-known steel pyramid was placed on One Canada Square. One year after that, the first tenants moved to Canary Wharf, on State Street, and since then, the area has continuously blossomed, gradually turning in the major business district known today.
Canary Wharf currently contains major banks such as Credit Suisse, Barclays, Citigroup or HSBC, renowned law firms such as Allen & Overy or Clifford Chance, as well as dozens of service firms and news media firms such as Trinity Mirror or Thomson Reuters.
